Are you considering color Contact Lenses?
I have an HMO here and I thought that it would be pretty simple/cut and dry to get into some contacts. I
have never worn them before. I have a pair of glasses that I rarely use, and that is about it. So I first made
an appointment with the optometry department in my area and requested a "contact lens fitting".
When I went to this appointment, I thought that is what was going to happen. What happened was I paid a
$10 (USD) co-pay, to have a routine eye exam, and to be approved to wear contacts. So the first step you
need to take is to get a routine eye exam. This way they can tell you right then and there if you are able to
wear them at all. I found out in this exam that I have Astigmatism. This means my eye or cornea is shaped
like a football, or oval rather than round. This means that I wouldn't get to choose from all available colors
out there, just those available for someone with Astigmatism. Also, this means I need what they call a "toric"
lens witch is weighted to sit on both axes of my vision..meaning the actual lens must be slightly weighted on
one side so that is stays in place at all times when worn.
Then I thought that since I was ok'd to wear contacts I would be able to get them through my HMO. When I
arrived for the lens fitting appointment, the woman who was to fit me (who we will refer to as "crazy
psycho-b*tch" from here forward LOL =0P ) was so terribly rude to me that I ended up just walking away
empty handed. Apparently, my HMO has a policy that if you do not plan on buying your lenses (where the
real $$ is) they refuse to hand you your prescription-or even fit you! So what happened is, I walked away
with a bad experience. She could have explained why my HMO demanded I pay $303.00 USD for the fitting
and 12 pairs of lenses a little better, without going off the mental deep end, as anyone would question the
high cost and lack of options! She could have explained more sympathetically about why my HMO refuses
to give out the prescription. But she didn't. I luckily did not pay any co-pay for that appointment. I went
straight over to the local Wal-Mart.
Wal-Mart charges $99.00 USD to fit you, do a general eye exam, and give you sample contacts, some
colored lenses to try, and teach you how to put in and take out your lenses. They charged me only $79.00
USD because I had already had a very current eye exam over at the HMO. So save yourself $20, and get
the general eye exam at your HMO if it is cheaper for you to do it this way (my coverage does not include
contacts). The Dr. I saw at Wal-Mart was very nice. I recommend to all of you- Do Not Wear Eye Makeup
to the fitting appointment. It interfered with me being able to put them in, as the mascara kept getting on
the lenses. Putting in contacts for the first time, is very difficult, do not chide yourself- it is really something
you have to practice at. It took me like 45 minutes to an hour to get them in. I just was not used to
"touching my eye" as my mother always told me I guess- "Don't stick your fingers in your eye". Once you
get past this, is becomes easier, so don't give up!
They gave me the available samples in colors to try. I got Fresh Look colors in Blue, Green, Gray, and
Honey. One lens only for each color. I would like to get the blue for the Elf look and the Honey for a more
sinister look- perhaps a Vampire costume. Be advised the sample contacts have "DEMO" or "TEST"
printed on the lens so you don't really want to wear them out. Colored contacts are harder to insert than
clear lenses. They are "wimpy" and fold on you all the time, and are a general pain in the rear. Not all the
colored contacts you will choose from are as difficult to handle as the Fresh Look ones. Some are easier to
handle. I was given a sample of "Wild Eyes" and "Ultra Flex 55 Colors", and they were both easier to insert.
All the lenses shift (when you look left to right they move away from center) perhaps more on me, because
of the Astigmatism, but beware of this.
All in all, I paid $89.00 USD to get some colored contact lenses fitted. I paid $33.99 USD (on sale at
Wal-Mart) PER EYE for some "Wild Eyes X-Colors" lenses in the color Dark Blue, or Royal Blue (lower left
corner of photo above). These last for one year.. A total of $156.98 USD.
Not bad compared to the package of $303.00 USD over at the HMO (unless you can get a better deal
within your HMO because your coverage covers them). The Boxes of disposable colored lenses available,
such as "Fresh Look Color Blends" run around $36.95 USD for a box of 6. You need to buy some for both
your left eye and right eye, so you pay double that for both eyes. The disposable lenses are to be thrown
away in about two weeks time, depending on what your doctor tells you.
Wal-Mart WILL give you a copy of your prescription so that you can go anywhere you want to go to get
your lenses. Apparently the contact lenses go on sale twice a year at Wal-Mart, so try to find out in your
area when that is. Look for the Vision Center Logo on the Wal Mart web site.
A note on this: I was told by my local newly re-built Wal-Mart Vision Center associate that you
can go ahead and get your eyes checked let's say at your HMO (which in some cases might
actually be free, depending on your coverage of course) and get your glasses prescription from
them. Then take your glasses prescription to Wal-Mart Vision Center and they will fit you based
on that. This will cost you $44.00 USD instead of the yearly $89.00 USD. Your eye glasses
prescription is good for I believe two years vs. one year with the contacts prescription. Check
this out with your local Wal-Mart Vision Center. JUST MAKE SURE YOUR EYEGLASS
PRESCRIPTION SAYS: "OK FOR CONTACTS" OR SIMILAR SO WAL-MART CAN USE IT.
You can also re-fill your contact lens prescription with Wal-Mart Online now, no NEW prescriptions, only
REFILLS.
This whole process is much easier for those who already have their prescription, and have been wearing
them for years.
Another inexpensive place to get contacts filled would be Sam's Club or Costco, wholesale to the public
warehouse bulk type stores if they have a vision center.
The Wild eyes are NOT prescription (that is to say, they ARE available to you ONLY with a prescription for
contact lenses, BUT they do not have to be for vision correction they can be just for fun). So anyone can
wear these. The thing you have to get most used to, besides learning to touch your eyeball! LOL is the
colored lenses shift in your eye allot. This can be scary if you were driving, or needing to read, etc.. Just
be careful. They take getting used to.
Be safe, take care of your eyes, and remember-doing something stupid like sharing someone else?s
contacts could result in you not being able to see- or never being able to wear contacts. =0O
Don't be afraid to make a second follow-up appointment with your eye care professional, and remember,
no question is a "dumb question" because that is what they are there for. Don't be afraid to walk in to the
eye care center and ask questions, find out your options, discuss your experience with your contacts, this
is the only way to get yourself comfortable with the whole situation. Follow all the Doctor's guidelines on
post exam contact lens care, and read all the literature they give you, follow the directions carefully and
you will be fine. Just remember to report any problems to the Doctor right away.

I wanted to add more information regarding the makeup used on Liv Tyler as Arwen.
I think that you should always go with what looks best on you. We all aren't blessed with the fair
complexion of Liv Tyler (there's only one of her in the world)..but we can play up our best qualities. So by
all means if you luck out here, and happen to have that nice ivory complexion, and all the colors
represented here suit you- go for them, otherwise, I suggest going with what looks best on you, for your
skin tone. Only you know what that will be. =0)
It is known that her makeup for the film (as detailed in the article "Steal this Look" -Instyle Magazine)
consists of high-end professional makeup products. If you are like me, and on a budget, you might not
be able to afford a whopping $137.00 USD for all the products noted in the article that were used on her.
The products used on her were made by the cosmetic companies of M.A.C, Lancome Paris, and
Clinique. I have put together a color sample of the products named, as well as information about the
discontinued product mentioned, and the alternatives.
If you are able to afford to splurge on all the products, by all means go for it- if you can't don't fret,
because there are lower priced similar products out there, you just have to look for them. If you have a
color printer, you can print out the image above and take it with you to the drug store to help you find
similar colors. Keep in mind, however that the samples are not the same thing as having the product in
hand to compare.
Here is the basic run down on the products used on "Arwen" in the film (as noted in the
Instyle Magazine article)
1.)FOUNDATION BASE: M.A.C STUDIO FINISH MATTE FOUNDATION
SHADE NC 15 Price $19.50 USD
2.)BLUSH: M.A.C "SHY PINK" BLUSH *
*I found out from M.A.C that the blush in the shade of "shy pink" is in fact discontinued, and
no longer available for purchase. They recommended the shade "Pink Swoon" Sheertone
Blush instead as an alternative.*
BLUSH: M.A.C Pink Swoon Sheertone Blush
Price $16.00 USD
3.)POWDER: LANCOME PARIS PHOTOGENIC SHEER PRESSED POWDER
SHADE: IVORIE Price $25.00 USD
4.)LIPS: CLINIQUE "Almost Lipstick"
SHADE: BLACK HONEY Price $13.50 USD
5.)EYES: M.A.C VELVET EYE SHADOW
SHADE: VANILLA US$12.50 USD
6.)EYES: M.A.C "SPICE" EYESHADOW *
*The eye shadow listed on the Instyle article as being "spice" is not actually an eye
shadow..it's available as a blush..and of course can be used on the eyes.*
M.A.C FROST BLUSH
SHADE: SPICE US$16.00 USD
7.)EYES: CLINIQUE BROW SHAPER*
SHADE: SHAPING TAUPE Price $14.50 USD
*The article details that this was used on the "top lash line only"..even though this product is
for shaping your eyebrows (?) So it's questionable if they meant that it was used on the eyes
or on the brow.*
8.)EYES: LANCOME PARIS DEFINICILS MASCARA
SHADE: BLACK Price $20.00 USD

ON A BUDGET? ME TOO...
So what do you do, if you want to get this look, but you're not into splurging? Head to your local drug
store. Rite-Aid is perfect for purchasing makeup, because of their "guarantee" that if you do not like a
product, even if it's slightly used, bring it back and they will refund your money. No other store I have
found offers such peace of mind.
A word on going cheap: Please, do not buy the "Wet n Wild" products for lips. I found out the hard way.
The lipstick was like glue, wouldn't come off, and tasted HORRIBLE!..I know, I know, it's only $0.99 USD
but it's not worth it. Trust me on this.
I suggest for the Foundation a light porcelain or ivory toned base. This is, if you have a skin tone to go
with it, otherwise maybe try a slightly lighter shade than what you are used to wearing, or just stick with
your own brand. Can't go wrong there. I trust Neutrogena products. I have finicky, sensitive, acne-prone
skin..and Neutrogena does not usually bother me. I would recommend Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid
Makeup in the shade Natural Buff for starters. Price $10.49 USD.
For the Blush, Maybelline Brush Blush in "Sea Shell Pink" which is very much like the color shown. If
used lightly, I am sure it would be perfect. Price $3.97 USD.
For the spice eye shadow (blush) I found Burt's Bees Wings of Love All Natural Blushing Creme with
Vitamin E in Shade Clarity. Price $8.99 USD.
For the MAC eye shadow "Vanilla"..I found Revlon Illuminance Creme Shadow Quad, in Shade Skinlights
(there is one shade almost identical to the original in the quad as well as others). Price $6.49 USD.
NOTE: THIS EYE SHADOW IS A CREAM STYLE SHADOW. IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THIS STYLE OF
EYE SHADOW- CAN'T GET IT TO WORK FOR YOU-TRY COVER GIRL'S PROFESSIONAL EYE
ENHANCERS IN THE SHADE "FRENCH VANILLA" IT IS A POWDER SHADOW.
For the Brow Shaper, I recommend Maybelline Ultra-Brow in shade Light Brown (for lighter brows) or for
the same look as the film, Dark Brown. Price $5.49 USD.
For the Powder, I recommend Covergirl Clean Pressed Powder in shade Natural Ivory. Price $5.79 USD.
For the Mascara, any black mascara will do! I recommend Almay Amazing Lash Mascara because I have
sensitive eyes, and this is the ONLY mascara I can tolerate. Price $5.99 USD.
And for the lips, I found Burts Bees Wings of Love All Natural Lipstick, in shades Honesty or Strength.
Price $8.99 USD. These shades are also available in a lip liner, same price. For something closer to the
original, try filling in your lips with the pencil, and then top with a lip gloss for shine.
I just got a little lucky to begin with because my color pallet is similar to that used on her in the film, so I
didn't have to buy much, thankfully.

I have had pretty good luck with Drugstore.com. I have purchased several times from them in
the past, and they have come through, no hassle. I do recommend them. See my links below.
Here is something fun!
A company called Demeter Fragrances NYC has made a spray cologne called New Zealand, on
the web site the company states: "Our new fragrance, New Zealand, was designed at the
request of the Prime Minister of New Zealand for the New York premier party sponsored by
the government of New Zealand for The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers." LOL! =0) The
Fragrance library is huge, and includes some really fun scents like Sugar Cookie, Brownie,
Sex on the Beach (the cocktail), and Dirt..I have smelled some of the samples at a local
Sephora store, and let me tell you- Dirt REALLY SMELLS LIKE..DIRT! Check them out
