The Costume Consisted of Five Pieces: A Crown of Gold: Mustard wears a very delicate crown made of silver plated copper wire in the color gold. The crown has been hand formed/twisted. Two "antennae" stand up on the left and the right in the front of it, and on the very tips some tiny mustard seed colored glass beads adorn the curls. The crown will fit nicely on the stuffed pillow form I made for it. The pillow form is made of pure cotton, stuffed with 100% polyester fill. A rod of brass runs through the center and a hook on either end keeps it all in place. The crown circumference is approximately 3". A Winged Doublet: Mustard wears a bodice with wings in the back. The bodice was designed with a doublet in mind. Doublets were worn by men and women during the 1400's, all the way through the mid 1600's. The Doublet is made of a light mustard colored raw silk noil which has such an organic feel to it, and that is why I chose it for this. Nubby, and pebbled in feel with an almost "seeded" appearance. The lining of the doublet is a dark mustard colored fabric. The front of the bodice has been embroidered with contrasting thread in a wild flower and swirl design, and tiny translucent glass beads have been added here and there, the colors of tiny mustard seeds. I did the embroidery completely free-style on my sewing machine, and then hand beaded it. The collar is a standing collar, and the sleeves are made in the traditional wing-like style for a doublet. The bust of the doublet has been padded with some polyfill, to add to the "pigeon chest" silhouette. The side seams have a decorative "X" stitch. The doublet has attached skirts as well. The collar, sleeves, and skirts are all made of the same crinkled tissue silk fabric in the color white and gold. The fabric has a glassy sheen in the light. The back of the doublet has 4 sets of gold colored eyelets. The top pair of eyelets hold Mustard's wings onto the bodice. The wings are entirely hand made. The gold veining was hand painted on and then the wings were treated with a clear and glitter spray which creates a wavy effect on the surface, creating a look not unlike a dragonfly wing. The wings are thin and flexible acrylic. The wings start at the shoulder blades and stop at mid calf. A mustard colored cotton cord allows the bodice to be laced up in the back. The bodice is fully removable from the dress form that it arrives on. The dress form is made of cotton and stuffed with 100% polyester fill. There is a brass rod running through the center and a hook on one end which allows it to hang from the curved brass rod which has been inserted into the wood base. A Flower Petal Skirt: The skirt is made up of three layers. Each layer consists of five panels which are all shaped like flower petals. Each outer panel has been decoratively edged and stitched on my machine and then hand beaded with amber and mustard seed colored glass beads. The outer layer of petals are made of a light mustard colored raw silk noil fabric and the two inner layers are made of a crinkled tissue silk fabric in the color white and gold. The inner skirt fabric has a glassy sheen in the light. The inner skirt layers are staggered to give it the look of a flower. The inner skirt layers are decoratively edged with fine gold thread on my machine. The waistband has been decorated with more stitches to match the outer skirt petals and some more of the glass beads. The skirt fastens in the back with one silver snap, and one silver hook & eye. The skirt is fully removable from the dress form that it arrives on. Undergarment: Mustard came to me not wearing anything under her skirt. I asked her if she wouldn't mind putting on her panties. At first, she protested, but when I told her that I would not allow her to pose for me standing on her head like she wanted to unless she put them on, she agreed. Mustard's panties are made of a gold metallic sparkle knit fabric. They open in the back and have a small bit of hook & loop tape sewn onto the opening. The front of the panties have a bow of velvet thread, and all around the waist are little loops of tiny glass beads. The panties are fully removable from the dress form they arrive on. Shoes: Mustard was wearing the most unusual little shoes I had ever seen. When I asked her who had made her shoes for her she turned bright red, and became quite angry at me! She was very insulted! She told me that she had made them herself of course. Mustard's shoes are entirely hand made. They are made of crinkled silk fabric in the color of rose gold. They have a brown leather sole and heel. The back of the boot and the folded edge are both trimmed with mustard colored glass beads. The inside is lined with the same fabric. The front is decorated with a strand of yarn which looks like wild golden hair. A limited edition of 4 made in 2007. The Wild Mustard collection is sold. All Wild Mustard collections are held by private collectors. Made in 1/6 scale for Barbie, Tiny Kitty Collier, Volks, and Obitsu 27cm dolls. |
