This Costume was inspired by: The Masquerade Ball Gown from Marie Antoinette The Limited Edition Set Consisted of Twelve Pieces: A Chemise: The chemise is made of fine cotton lawn in white. It stops right below the knee. The tiny sleeves are decorated with a scalloped stitch in white, and the hemline is decorated in the same fashion. The neckline is sewn with a ribbon drawstring so that it can be gathered up. The neck and front opening edges are trimmed with tiny white crochet lace. Stockings: The stockings are made from a cotton/lycra stretch fabric in a matte finish in the color black. They have attached "ribbon garters" in black satin. The stockings reach to the thigh. The stockings arrived tucked inside the handmade Cinema-Fantasy shoe box. Stays: The stays are made from a total of 7 layers, yet they are surprisingly flexible and thin. A facing fabric of interfaced cotton printed with a delicate floral and vine motif in green and tangerine/apricot. All eyelets sewn by hand with embroidery thread, no metal eyelets were used to be more historically accurate. The eyelets are all done with a pale tangerine colored floss. All the edges have been finished with an apricot colored binding in cotton. There are pale apricot satin ribbons tied in bows and stitched in place on either side of the straps. The back eyelets were plotted out so that you can lace them in the traditional diagonal way. I even created a web page with lacing instructions. Panniers: The Panniers (some spell it Paniers), are known in England as False Hips or Pocket Hoops. They are made of white cotton, and each pocket hoop section holds three rows of flexible boning inside sturdy casings. The waistband has a ribbon tie in front. The function of the Panniers is to hold the skirt out and up on the sides in an oval shape. They have slits on both sides where a lady could reach in to grasp her belongings, as purses were not the fashion yet. They are very light. The Panniers are tied in the front and the back right above the third row of boning to keep the silhouette from becoming too wide. Each bone has been rounded off. Shoes: Marie's shoes are typical of the 18th century in style, with a little contemporary artistic flair. The shoes are entirely hand made. No manufactured parts are used in the making of the shoes. The heels are all individually hand sculpted and then covered with black silk taffeta. The upper and the lining are also black silk taffeta. The innersole is made from a medium brown leather, and the outersole is made from a textured black leather. The lift on the heel is also black leather. They are decorated up on the vamp with a little black satin bow and in the center is a tiny crystal rhinestone. The shoes measure 2" long by 1" tall. The shoes arrived tucked inside a hand made Cinema-Fantasy shoe box. A Petticoat: The petticoat is made of white cotton, and has a gathered and pinked flounce or trim on the hem in an embroidered cotton/linen. It opens on both sides of the waist with white ribbon ties. The sides have wide slits to allow access to the pocket hoop slits which would have served as pockets for a lady during this time. The hem falls just above the ankles. The waist is pleated and finished with white waistband. A Skirt: The skirt of this costume consists of 4 layers. The under skirt is made of black silk taffeta. The under skirt is unlined and all seams are French seams. The outer skirt is made of 3 layers of black tulle. The skirt falls just above the toes of the shoe. The skirt closes in back with one hook & eye, and a waistband of black silk taffeta carries a black satin ribbon tie so that you can create an even tighter fit around the waist to accommodate the bodice of the costume. The skirt is slightly longer in the back than the front. A Bodice: The bodice of this costume is made of black silk taffeta lined with black cotton. The center front panel has been embroidered, beaded, and tiny iridescent sequins were added. A bow, flower and swirl motif is the theme and this decoration in a slightly smaller form also appears on the bodice outer sleeve. The sleeves are made of black silk taffeta and black silk chiffon. The bodice has 18 hand sewn eyelets on the center back to lace it closed. At the neckline edge all the way to the shoulders is an insert of gathered black tulle. The center front is angled down towards the skirts and the sides and back sit right at the waist. A very snug fitting bodice, the skirts tuck up underneath the bodice at the lower edge. The chiffon under sleeve has been decorated with black lace, black satin ribbon and rhinestones at the hem. Earrings: The earrings are entirely hand made. A chandelier style earring. Sterling silver posts attached to hand sculpted star/flower shapes. The center of each post has a clear rhinestone and lots of antique silver glitter. The second portion is hand painted brass finding, lots of glitter and some small rhinestones. The drop at the bottom is hand sculpted in a moon and sunburst free form shape. Hand painted silver, more glitter and more rhinestones The earrings measure 3/4" long by 3/8" wide. Ostrich Feathers for the Hair: The feathers are Ostrich. They have been trimmed down to scale for 16" dolls. Two black and one white feathers are bound together with a white specialty tape. The tape is bound with black satin ribbon and the ribbon has been stitched through all layers. A Mask: A sheer black organza mask. Organza ribbon has been stitched to black satin ribbon ties on either end. The mask fits over the bridge of the nose across the eyes and ties in back in a bow. A Hat Stand: A round wood base and wood peg, hand painted in white with 18k gold leaf pen details. All layers of paint were sealed. The ball is foam, covered with the same white on white floral fabric as the dress form display. The edges have been pinked and the fabric tightly gathered around the ball, secured in place with stitches and decorated with a white satin bow in back. A Limited Edition of 4 made in 2007.
